Soil properties limiting vegetation establishment along roadsides

چکیده
Abstract Roadside vegetation provides a multitude of ecosystem services, including pollutant remediation, runoff reduction, wildlife habitat, and aesthetic scenery. Establishment permanent along paved roads after construction can be challenging, particularly within 1 m the pavement. Adverse soil conditions could one leading factors limiting roadside growth. In this study, we assessed physical chemical properties transect perpendicular to road at six microtopographic positions (road edge, shoulder, side slope, ditch, backslope, field edge) two highway segments near Beaver Crossing Sargent, NE. At site, Na concentration was 81 times, exchangeable 66 cone index (compaction parameter) times higher road‐edge position (closest with sparse vegetation) compared abundant (ditch or edge). Sargent 111 213 up ditch field‐edge positions. Likewise, electrical conductivity macroaggregation water infiltration were lower edge than Soil improved increasing distance from road. Exchangeable percentage exceeded threshold levels for growth sensitive plants. Thus, high increased compaction appear establishment Nebraska highways.

Natural product herbicides for vegetation control are being considered as alternatives to synthetic herbicides by many public agencies. Studies were conducted along roadsides at the Hopland Research and Extension Center (HREC) in 2001 and 2002 and on California State Route 29 (SR29) in 2002 to evaluate acetic acid, pine oil, and plant essentials compared with glyphosate for control of herbaceou...

Characterization of Biophysical Vegetation - Soil Dynamics along an Eco-climatic Brazilian Transect with Modis Vegetation Indices
Field measurements were conducted on 10 June through 21 July 2002 to collect biophysical data in support of MODIS validation studies. Leaf Area Index (LAI), Plant Area Index (PAI), Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR), biomass, cover components, site characterization and soil characterization were measured. The study areas extended over an eco-climatic transect, from the cerrado...
متن کاملPredicting species distributions from samples collected along roadsides.
Predictive models of species distributions are typically developed with data collected along roads. Roadside sampling may provide a biased (nonrandom) sample; however, it is currently unknown whether roadside sampling limits the accuracy of predictions generated by species distribution models. We tested whether roadside sampling affects the accuracy of predictions generated by species distribut...
